What if you suddenly felt repulsed by the unilateral reports addressed on TV, what would you do? What if you had saved up to buy your own house, but the real estate rates skyrocket and you are at crisis? Artist Ryu Bi Ho gives the secret method to escape such obstinate and uncomfortable situations that we face in our lives. For example, he gives friendly ‘escape manuals’ such as ‘fold airplanes out of ‘paper cups’’ when you feel repulsed by the unilateral reports, and ‘make ‘powders’ by breaking up biscuits’ when you are at crisis due to skyrocketing real estate rates.
Whether we like it or not, big and small changes happen in our lives due to the intervention of outside forces. Although social limitations and factors that ‘abruptly’ intervene our lives are undesired, we cannot avoid them. One cannot prevent the real estate rates from skyrocketing on his own, and we all know quite well that it is not easy to block unilateral reports. Since his first solo exhibition 〈Steel Sun〉(2000), for over 10 years Artist Ryu Bi Ho has been dealing with issues of pressure and limitations enforced on individuals by society, and their psychological anxiety and resistance towards it, in many different ways including videos, installations and performances; and for this February exhibition at COMO, the subject is on the rivalry between society and individuals. To be more precise, we ask how we can escape or overcome the suppression that society has upon us.
You may question how paper cup airplanes and biscuit powders will resolve our anxiety, anger, suffocation that suddenly dawn upon us. You wouldn’t really try it would you? Haha. This groundless escape manual by artist Ryu Bi Ho just shows that the means to escape the interventions in this society as individuals are through ‘enjoyable and erratic’ actions.
